People Spotlight: Natalya Hendricks
27 August 2024
In our latest People Spotlight, we caught up with Natalya Hendricks, Renewables Development Project Manager, to find out what she loves most about her job and how she spends her free time.
Tell us a little bit about your career journey so far
My professional path began far from where I stand today. With a Bachelor’s and Master’s in International Relations, I initially ventured into roles aligned with that field but found them unfulfilling. I then transitioned into Quality Assurance and Change Management. After having my kids, I took a short break, which gave me some time to think about what I really wanted to do.
I started volunteering to explore new interests and eventually landed a part-time job in a climate change project in Aberdeen. That experience sparked a passion for environmentalism, leading me to pursue a Master’s in Environmental Management. Since then, I’ve worked with Home Energy Scotland and Local Energy Scotland, helping households and communities on their journey toward Net Zero.
I then spotted an opportunity to work with Scottish Water Horizons on their solar programme. This role was particularly appealing to me because it allowed me to engage with larger-scale renewable energy projects and make a more substantial contribution to climate targets.
What kind of work do you do in Horizons?
I recently celebrated my first year at Scottish Water Horizons, where I’m a Project Manager in the Business Development team. My main focus is on identifying and assessing the feasibility of renewable energy projects – primarily solar power, but more recently wind too – which keeps things interesting.
There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes before a project even gets on site. A typical day might involve anything from working with planners and developing business cases for solar schemes to engaging with a range of internal and external stakeholders. I also organise site visits, work closely with contractors to tackle challenges and find solutions, and prepare tenders and proposals for new solar projects. The variety in my role is one of the things I love most about what I do.
What are you enjoying most about your role?
I love that every day brings something new. The variety, the challenges, and the need for creative problem-solving keep my work exciting. What makes it even more fulfilling is that I’m passionate about protecting the environment, so it’s rewarding to do work that truly aligns with my values.
One of the highlights for me is meeting people – especially in person – where I get to connect and build relationships. And then there are the site visits, which are one of the absolute best parts of my job. I’ve had the chance to visit some incredible places with breathtaking views. As someone who loves nature and the great outdoors, this aspect of my work really resonates with me.
What has been the biggest highlight of your experience with us so far?
The real highlight for me has been discovering that I work for a company that truly cares about its people. It’s one thing to enjoy your job, but it’s another to feel genuinely supported and valued by your workplace.
We spend such a big part of our lives at work, and knowing that I’m part of a team that feels more like a family is absolutely priceless. It’s comforting to know that I’m not just another employee; I’m part of a company that invests in my wellbeing and growth, and that makes all the difference.
What are your plans for the future?
Right now, I’m exploring the feasibility of several wind projects in the north of Scotland, as well as a floating solar PV scheme – a first for Scottish Water.
It’s an exciting time, and I’m pleased to be involved in these innovative projects. The idea of turning these concepts into reality is really motivating, and I can’t wait to see how we can make them happen. Being part of something that could have such a positive impact on our energy landscape is both challenging and deeply rewarding.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
“Spare time” is a luxury in my life! With two children deeply involved in after-school activities – my daughter is a competitive swimmer and my son passionate about football – my evenings are often spent chauffeuring them around. Our two dogs also keep me active; one particularly enjoys hillwalking with me on weekends. Catch-ups with friends usually involve a walk. Additionally, I’m committed to personal development, attending workshops, listening to self-improvement podcasts during drives. And when I’m not doing any of that, you’ll find me at the gym.
Where would you most like to visit in the world?
Madeira is at the top of my travel list right now. It’s a paradise for hikers, plus it’s warm and beautiful.
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I speak four languages fluently: Azerbaijani, Russian, English and Turkish. I used to be fluent in German too, but I’ve lost it since I haven’t used it much after university.
What’s your favourite food and why?
I’m a big fan of healthy eating. It gives me a sense of well-being, knowing that I’m nourishing my body and making positive choices for myself. I truly believe in the saying, “We are what we eat.”
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you have all the time in the world. Follow your passions, keep learning and focus on what you can control.
