People Spotlight: Fiona Dall
07 September 2022
For our latest People Spotlight, we chatted with Fiona Dall, our Business Performance Analyst. Fiona plays a vital role in keeping our finances on track to support business decision making.
Hi Fiona, tell us a little bit about your career journey so far…
I’ve always enjoyed working with numbers so a career in management accounts seemed like the natural choice.
I graduated with a master’s degree in Accountancy and Finance from Heriot Watt University before securing a training contract with an accountancy firm in Edinburgh. It was a brilliant opportunity as it meant I could continue my studies and qualify as a Chartered Accountant.
I then worked for a few years in public practice in my hometown of Perth, before joining Scottish Water as a Management Accountant. Over the years I’ve supported various business areas including Finance, IT, Fleet and Corporate Communications. I then took the plunge and joined Scottish Water Horizons in 2011 and haven’t looked back since!
What does a typical day look like?
No two days are ever the same, despite the monthly cyclical nature of my job. Adhoc tasks always crop up which keeps my job interesting and varied.
The sheer variety of businesses that my team and I support also keeps us on our toes. We need to keep abreast of everything that goes on to ensure we provide the best support that we can. From preparing financial reports and managing cashflow, to analysing performance and supporting my team there’s never a dull moment!
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The variety! Working in such a fast-paced business means I’m often called upon to provide finance support. As we support so many business areas, it means we are continually challenged and need to learn new skills along the way. I can honestly say every day is a school day!
What has been the biggest highlight of your experience so far?
It’s hard to pick just one thing. Being part of such an amazing company and feeling that I have contributed in some way to its success has been a brilliant experience. Scottish Water Horizons has grown so much over the last few years and I’m proud to be part of it.
Our businesses are expanding and new opportunities are being explored all the time. There is also a massive focus on achieving net zero emissions and I can’t wait to see where the journey will take us.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I’m afraid I’m pretty boring! I have four children, a dog, and a husband so there are always plenty of things going on in my house to keep me busy! I enjoy walking my dog and love to go camping (well should I say glamping) with my family when we get the opportunity.
What’s the last TV show you binge-watched?
Stranger Things – I avoided this for years as it didn’t appeal to me but with all the hype over the latest series, I thought I’d give it a bash. I ended up being hooked straight away! I suppose this was a life lesson that I should give things a chance before I write them off…
What’s your favourite food and why?
Chocolate!!!! Just because it’s delicious and I have a majorly sweet tooth.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Treat others like you would like to be treated yourself. I always aim to treat people with kindness and respect and hope this comes across through in all my interactions.
