New Monkland Primary Helps Replant Trees After Infrastructure Upgrade
07 March 2025
A group of pupils from New Monkland Primary School recently participated in a tree-planting initiative in Glenmavis, following a £2 million sewer upgrade project in the area.
The initiative, organised in collaboration with Scottish Water Horizons, Mackenzie Construction and North Lanarkshire Council, aimed to restore green spaces impacted by the infrastructure improvements.
The sewer system upgrade resulted in the removal of several trees, a measure taken to ensure the success of the critical infrastructure improvements. In response, project organisers coordinated a tree planting event to offset the environmental impact.

Educational Opportunity for the Students
New Monkland Primary pupils worked alongside the project team to plant new saplings and contribute to the regeneration of the local ecosystem.
Equipped with gloves and shovels, the students engaged in the replanting process, demonstrating their commitment to environmental stewardship. The event provided an educational opportunity, allowing the children to learn about the ecological benefits of trees, including their role in the carbon cycle, wildlife habitats, and overall environmental sustainability during their class time.
Many pupils expressed excitement at the prospect of returning in years to come to see how their trees had flourished and contributed to the landscape.

Local officials and project representatives commended the pupils for their enthusiasm and dedication to the initiative. Their efforts were praised as an example of how communities, businesses, and future generations can work together to preserve and enhance the environment.
Alastair Kerr, Senior Engagement Communications Lead at Scottish Water Horizons, said:
“It’s fantastic to see young people engaging with sustainability in such a hands-on way. We’re committed to environmental responsibility, and projects such as this tree-planting initiative provide a valuable opportunity to educate and inspire future generations. These pupils are making a real difference to their local environment, and we’re proud to work alongside them in creating a greener, more sustainable future.
“The school is also participating in our Generation H2O education programme, helping pupils learn about the importance of water conservation and sustainability. As part of our commitment to supporting their efforts, we’ve provided a new water fountain and water butt, helping to instill lifelong habits of responsible water use.”

Long-Term Impact of the Tree Planting Initiative
The newly planted saplings will stand as a lasting testament to Scottish Water’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility by ensuring that sustainability remains a key focus of our work.
Over time, these trees will not only enhance the local landscape but also provide shade, improve air quality, and support local biodiversity.
As the trees take root and grow, they will serve as a reminder of the importance of collaborative efforts in protecting and preserving the environment for future generations. This initiative highlights the positive impact that proactive environmental responsibility can have, fostering a culture of sustainability that will benefit the community for years to come.
