Employee Spotlight: Amy Johnston

03 March 2022

For our latest Employee Spotlight we spoke to Amy Johnston, Project Manager in our Developer Projects Team. Amy is a relatively new face in Horizons and has already proven to be a brilliant asset to the team.

Hi Amy, tell us a little about your career journey so far.

It’s been a pretty mixed bag! I started out working in Operations Project Planning on the HMS Queen Elizabeth, and then moved to Barrow-in-Furness to work on the Astute Class Submarines. The Astute Class are part of the Royal Navy’s fleet of nuclear-powered submarines, so it was a really unusual and interesting project to work on.

After that I moved back up to Scotland and joined ID Systems as a Project Engineer, overseeing the delivery of pumping stations. I then joined Scottish Water’s graduate scheme, carrying out a number of placements around the business before joining Horizons as a Project Manager to support our consultancy work.

What is it about your current role that attracted you to it?

I thrive in a fast-paced environment, so the nature of our consultancy work really appeals to my skillset. Even though quick project turnarounds can be a challenge, it’s something I really enjoy.

It’s a great team to work with – the working environment is really supportive and helpful, which I’ve found quite unique – in a positive way!

What’s your favourite aspect of the role?

I enjoy the split between technical know-how and client management. It’s so rewarding when we complete a challenging project to the satisfaction of our customers – it makes the job feel really worthwhile and it’s great to have the opportunity to get to know our clients better.

Do you have any interesting or unusual hobbies you like to do in your spare time?

I’m a big fan of mountain biking and regularly compete in Enduro racing with my local team. For those who don’t know, Enduro racing is a timed race that involves getting downhill as quickly as possible!

I’ve recently taken up mixed martial arts (MMA) and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu too – as you can tell I like to be kept on my mental and physical game!

If you could see any band (dead or alive!) who would it be and why?

I’d love to go back to 2006-ish and see the Arctic Monkeys live – I don’t have a lot of time these days for going to gigs but I loved their earlier albums!

What does your perfect Saturday look like?

I love to keep active and get outdoors when I can, so it would start with descending a large hill on my mountain bike, followed by a run or work out at the gym. I like to finish my workout with a hot yoga session and then take a relaxing walk with my Jackawawa (half Jack Russel, half Chihuahua), Max!
