Borders College
Case study

A UK first

We facilitated access to the sewer network to help deliver low carbon heat to Borders College in Galashiels – the first heat scheme of its kind in the UK.

The system has helped the college meet their carbon targets whilst providing heat to a variety of buildings across the campus.

The College had been exploring several low-carbon methods of heating the campus.

The campus is made up of several different styles, ages and sizes of buildings, situated in the town of Galashiels.

The new heating system had to be able to be retrofitted to work with their existing heating controls, whilst providing reliable and sustainable heat to the entire campus.

The system, commissioned in 2015, is housed in a purpose built energy centre, designed to fit in with the existing aesthetic of the campus.

We facilitated access to the waste water network, allowing the College to install a heat from waste water system that met their energy needs.

Don’t just take our word for it…

“The system, facilitated by Scottish Water Horizons, provided that solution by extracting heat from the passing Scottish Water sewer capable of heating the College Campus in Galashiels, following commissioning in late 2015 we have witnessed a significant decline in gas consumption”
